The prestigious European Heart Journal publishes the results of a clinical trial for endovascular treatment of acute ischemic stroke, performed by interventional cardiologists in collaboration with neurologists from Acibadem City Clinic Cardiovascular Center.

The study was conducted between 2014 and 2017 among 46 consecutive patients with acute ischemic stroke who received state-of-the-art endovascular treatment. Angiographic recanalization was achieved with fully restored intracranial blood flow with 85% success rate. A team of interventional cardiologists with experience in carotid stenting under the guidance of Prof. Ivo Petrov (Dr. Zoran Stankov, Dr. Iveta Tasheva and Dr. Petar Polomski) in collaboration with the team of Assoc. Prof. Marko Klisurski (neurologist) uses different methods for treatment: intra-arterial supraselective thrombolysis, balloon percutaneous angioplasty, mechanical thromboaspiration with vacuum-aspiration system Penumbra, emergency stenting of the internal carotid artery in tandem stenosis or occlusion, or in dissection of the internal carotid artery.

The clinical experience of the multidisciplinary team is encouraging, with a relatively moderate to high rate of successful angiographic recanalization and good clinical results.
