A 75-year-old patient was saved in a 7-hour combined surgery, with the participation of surgeons from the fields of cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, urology and surgery of the liver-biliary tract

A multidisciplinary team of two hospitals, Acibadem City Clinic Cardiovascular Center and Acibadem City Clinic Tokuda Hospital, performed a life-saving surgery for a severe oncologic disease of combined pathology.

After an examination (incl. a CT) concerning some heaviness in the heart area and hematuria (urine in the blood), specialists found a tumor in the left kidney, with a thrombosis of the left kidney vein, as well as a thrombus in the inferior vena cava. The thrombus began to enter the right atrium, with the risk to stop the function of the heart.

The rare case imposed an immediate set of several surgical interventions by specialists in different fields, and therefore a team of key surgeons was gathered in one place. In the complicated surgery, specialists from Acibadem City Clinic Cardiovascular Center took part. “The complexity of the operation we performed would be a challenge for every European clinic. We united the experience of the best specialists from several Surgery Dept. at our hospitals; each of the surgeons did their part of the surgery, and together we achieved a result we are proud of”, Dr. Stefan Stefanov said.

According to Dr. Assen Kelchev, the surgery is a good example of how physicians from different fields, departments and hospitals should work as a team to save a patient’s life.

After a few days of stay in the ICU, under the special care of the team of physicians of the Cardiovascular Center, the patient was discharged in a good general condition. As a part of his further treatment, he is going to undergo chemotherapy at Acibadem City Clinic Oncology Center.
